I had a blast at the Ottawa Fahion Show on Fri Sept 30th, 2011. It was a new experience for me and I can’t wait for their next event.
I tried to focus on Natural hair at the show, and sad to say there weren’t many. I saw some gorgeous dreads and curlies in the crowd.
This lovely lady had a great protective style that I would love to try this winter!
In the Marketplace, located in the lobby area of where the show was held, there was a great set-up. Live bands playing on a small stage, great drinks, desinger, salon and jewlery booths.
I met this up-and-coming designer, Arife LALANI, who is coming out with his own clothing brand, Lala LandExclusive Arts Ltd (you can find their group on Facebook). Visually I compare his work to an urban and artistic Ed Hardy concept. Great ambition and great talent. Really deomstrates how art is design.
The shows that really stood out for me were the KANIA and NU I shows.
The clothes were crative and beautiful. They definitely had pieces that I would wear myself. The designer for KANIA (Stacey Bafi-Yeboa owner and designer www.kania.ca) definitely stood out for me because she appears to be a Natural.
The designer for Nu I by Vickie (designer Vickie Joseph www.nufashion.ca) had her model’s hair styled in an amazing protective style. Their cornrows were designed in a way to create an almost faux-hawk look on the sides of the scalp, but had a cornrowed swoop bang at the forhead.
I hope you were able to see some of the shows and/or read some of the reviews a well. Please leave a comment below if you have any pics or observations from the 2011 OFW. I think this is a great way to showcase art within Ottawa and I would love to see it grow to include definitley more local talent, great international guests and a variety in models styling wise.
