Good day,
I wanted to give an update on the progress of my Winter Regimen. It’s been about 1 month (and some) and I’ve already made some observations of my regimen. I have an idea on what is working (and will continue to work) and what’s gotta go.
The basics of my Winter Regimen are:
Finger detangle and separate my hair in sections-maybe 10-12 chunky twists.
After finger detangle, pre-poo overnight on Friday’s before every wash. I will alternate between my Jasmine oil and Vatika oil mixed with l’huile de Palma Christie (Haitian Palm Kernel oil).
Wash weekly, alternating with Live Clean apple cider vinegar – clarifying shampoo and co washing with J/A/S/O/N Biotin Conditioner. (The shampoo is plant based, vegan, no sulphates. Boitin provides strength to hair)
On the days I cleanse with shampoo I will follow with a deep conditioner. I plan to mix Herbal Essences Hello Hydration with olive oil and rosemary oil.
After every wash, I will air-dry my hair about 70%, un-twist 1 section at a time, apply Giovanni Direct Leave-In and my *new Shea mix and re-twist.
My choice of styling will be protective, hopefully 95% of the time. I plan on following this regimen no matter what method of protective styling I am doing at the moment (except the finger-detangle/twist/re-twist part…that may not happen with certain styles)
I will spritz my hair and then seal my hair with my Shea mix every other night.
Sleep with a satin head wrap.
I will apply Henna to my hair around the first of the month. If the colour is becoming too rusty or red looking-and I don’t like it, I may add indigo or a black Henna dye to my Henna mix to hopefully balance the colour out.
Out of these steps, which are more detailed and particular than I would prefer (I’m a minimalist remember) I’ve found that what works is,
My weekly pre-poo/hot oil treatments.
This is what’s been missing from my hair regimen since I’ve started my journey!
My hair is never dry or crunchy feeling. There isn’t really a need to reapply moisture and sealant every other night. I was surprised the very first week….I touched my hair and it felt great.
Another plus to this regimen for my hair is alternating my Saturday shampoo’s/deep condition and my co-washing.
I would like to co-wash more often but I’ve realized that my hair needs to be cleasned at least twice a week. My hair’s appearance and body and weightlessness is usually at its best after a shampoo/deep condition Saturday.
I need to do more protective styling and for longer periods of time.
I’ve been slacking on this one y’all 😦
I started with mini-twists which were grrreat! And washing my hair with them in was also great because it was less time consuming. Once I took those out….I became too lazy to add them back.
So for the last 2 weeks or so I’ve been bunning my hair (which is also a protective style) but now I’m back to my famous puff……I love my puff but since I’m trying to retain my hair in order to see more length this summer, I gotta step my protective-style-game UP!
Sprtitzing and sealing my hair every other night is not necessary since I’ve kept up with my weekly oil treatments.
I’ll just add moisture then seal when needed.
I also neglected to do my henna treatment this the first weekend of February so that’s in my plans for this upcoming weekend. I will definitely stick to henna since I want to keep my red colour for the summer but I’m not adding in permanent hair dye this time around.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST-I’m letting go of all my particulars with regards to the products used.
I do not want to become a product junkie….I ain’t got $ like that.
I am going to stick with this regimen but go back to being myself when it comes to products. I will try to look for the most natural cost-effective product….locally.
So below I’ve added what I will continue to do. Showing where I was with the Winter Regimen and where I am going for the next month and change.
THEN: Finger detangle/separate hair in sections maybe 10-12 chunky twists. NOW: Continue to Finger detangle, separate hair in large chunky twists.
THEN: After finger detangle, pre-poo overnight on Friday’s before every wash. I will alternate between my Jasmine oil and Vatika oil mixed with l’huile de Palma Christie (Haitian Palm Kernel oil). NOW: Pre-poo/hot oil treatment for 4 hours or more every weekend. Will use any oil-JCBO (Jamaican Black Castor Oil), Vatika, Jasmine, Olive, Palma Christie, Jojoba etc etc
THEN: Wash weekly, alternating with Live Clean apple cider vinegar – clarifying shampoo and co washing with J/A/S/O/N Biotin Conditioner. (The shampoo is plant based, vegan, no sulphates. Boitin provides strength to hair) NOW: Wash bi-weekly with ANY plant based shampoo or Baking soda and/or Apple Cider vinegar mixed with water. Co-wash my hair weekly-with whatever conditioner my hands fall on (preferred choices: HE Hello Hydration, the J/A/S/O/N , Aubrey Organics or Giovanni line.)
THEN: On the days I cleanse with shampoo I will follow with a deep conditioner. I plan to mix Herbal Essences Hello Hydration with olive oil and rosemary oil. NOW: Follow shampoo with a deep conditioner-will use same conditioner(s) as above-but leave on hair for at least 2 hours.
THEN: After every wash, air-dry hair about 70%, un-twist 1 section at a time, apply Giovanni Direct Leave-In and my *new Shea mix and re-twist. NOW: This step stays the same. Helps keep hair as detangled as possible prior to styling.
THEN: Choice of styling will be protective, hopefully 95% of the time. I plan on following this regimen no matter what method of protective styling I am doing at the moment. NOW: This step will also stay the same. I’ve been slacking in this dept but I’m focussed man!
THEN: I will spritz my hair and then seal my hair with my Shea mix every other night. NOW: I will use this step when necessary, not every other night.
THEN: Sleep with a satin head wrap NOW: This is a must for my hair no matter which state it’s in!
THEN: I will apply Henna to my hair around the first of the month. If the colour is becoming too rusty or red looking-and I don’t like it, I may add indigo or a black Henna dye to my Henna mix to hopefully balance the colour out. NOW: I will continue with Henna. I may do it more often than once a month since I like the red in my hair…and I refuse to use permanent boxed dye this summer for colour.
